I must start this Beer For Breakfast entry with a text message I received from my dad after we tasted this particular beverage. It stated, "Banana Bread Beer gives you monkey farts."
He's so eloquent. I'm not really sure I can follow that, but I'll try.
This was a frequent suggestion by many a fan of Beer For Breakfast. Please, keep the suggestions coming. If you don't tell me what to drink, I'll just blindly go and buy whatever my eyes see first. And even though that SOUNDS like fun (and it is!) it's way MORE fun when I know I'm drinking something suggested by YOU, the listener. Got it? Good.
We are fast learning that Josh is the beer-snob of the group. He would never admit to it, but he boasts "many plates at the Flying Saucer.. and was a member of a beer club..." Sorry Josh, that's beer snob territory, but that's cool. He proudly exclaimed when I showed him what we were tasting that, "yeah, I've already had that." Awesome.
The best word I can think of to describe this beer is: balance. As soon as you put your nose to it, yup, there is an intense aroma of ACTUAL banana bread. Not something we're used to smelling in a beer, but if you're adventurous, hey... why not??! But, as I'm sure many people would be, we were nervous of the flavor. And I'm happy to say, Wells Brewery pulled the flavor of this beer off as a light, subtle tasting, high alcohol beverage. You will taste some banana and/or banana bread flavors, but it doesn't overpower the beer flavor, or come off too sweet. The best part is there is no lingering aftertaste that makes it too hard to go for another sip.
Is this an everyday beer? Probably not, but instead of dessert, or maybe as a nice little "beer snack," this packaging and flavor certainly hit the mark.
